The Wiley's continued to produce Piñon Salve and marketed it under Arto Specialties business name until Mr. Wiley was in his 90's. The children have now taken over the production of Piñon Salve and have named the new business West Y Trading in memory of the Gallup trading post.
The piñon pitch or sap has been used as a medicine by the Native American's for centuries to heal wounds and draw out splinters and infections. Early pioneers learned to mix this sticky tree sap with tallow and spread it on wounds.
In its natural form piñon pitch is very sticky and unmanageable. After years of research and development this formulation of Piñon Salve was created. It contains an extracted oil of piñon, petroleum jelly and lanolin. The resulting Piñon Salve is a soothing; non-staining salve that may be applied to minor cuts, scrapes, bruises and burns.
Piñon trees grow in the high desert regions of the southwest. The tree
"bleeds" sticky pitch that must be hand gathered.
